Why Sovereign Healing?
Sovereign is synonymous with the words: supreme power, mastery, autonomy, self-determination, non-alignment, and freedom.
Healing is synonymous with words like alleviate, help, attenuate, mend, and grow.
It might seem kind of odd at first to combine these two very different words, but I’ve found that these words accurately reflect the potential for freedom and growth, as two important pillars of change in our lives. Through freedom and growth, we can integrate our own shadows and work through some of the most difficult parts of our lives, in places where we feel the most stuck.
This idea might make sense if we think about the opposite of these words for a minute. The opposite of someone who is sovereign, is someone who feels controlled, subordinate, held captive, and trapped. If you’re not healing, you’re aggravating an injury, or at the very least, you are feeling stifled by it and can’t seem to move forward in life.
Similar to physical ailments and injuries, often our mental health too can be improved or made worse by different aspects of our lives – our relationship with certain vices, friends, family, societal expectations, and even our relationship with ourselves! We might feel paralyzed and overwhelmed, even at the thought of working through major life transitions where we feel out of control, or where we feel like we lack agency in our own lives.
Often when we feel we lack agency and power over our own feelings, thoughts, and behaviours, we can easily feel swept up by life and caught in familiar, overwhelming cycles, and find ourselves stuck and defeated. Without some sense of sovereignty over our own selves, how can we find the space to heal, and grow?
A lack of sovereignty might make you feel like you’re running on autopilot and just reacting to things around you. You might be surviving, but yearning to proactively thrive as an active force in your own life.
Sovereign healing is a mental health counselling service that is person-centered, and recognizes the unique intersections of life where we might feel lost, lacking agency, and feeling adrift. You might feel stuck in different areas of your life, such as:
- Addictions/Dependencies – with substances, specific behaviours, vices
- Life Transitions – death, disease, moving, changing roles and responsibility
- Relationships – with intimate partner, family, friends, society, and ourselves
- Personal Growth – personality, reactions, attachment styles, triggers, fears, anxieties
- Career Growth – changing roles, switching careers, adapting to demanding work dynamics
- Emotional Awareness/Regulation – the ability to feel, express, and be yourself, without feeling guilty, overwhelmed, judged, frozen, or burned out
Frequently Asked Questions
In-person counselling services are only available in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia, Canada.
Remote counselling options are available to all other clients, including video, audio, and text counselling service options.
Counselling can offer a safe space for you to express yourself.
With the guidance of a professional counsellor, you can gain new perspectives and learn different strategies to overcome whatever issues you’re facing.
Most sessions are ~50 minutes in length, but longer sessions are available upon request.
The sessions are very client-guided. Meaning, the nature of the problem and what brings you to counselling, may well be the starting point. There is no "right way" to have a counselling session, and no two sessions are the same. The best thing you can do to "prepare" is to bring your genuine self to the session 🙂
Everyone's journey and problems are unique. Counselling is unlike the Western Healing diagnose-and-prescribe model in that it does not promise a quick fix, or cure.
While completely voluntary (you may end counselling at any point in time), it is generally suggested that you commit to at least 2 - 4 sessions before noticing potentially significant changes in your life's circumstances. There are no absolute minimum or maximum number of sessions, as the process will unfold and both client and therapist will quickly learn about how much ongoing support you find benefits you the most.
Typically, clients book sessions on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. As things progress, clients may find that booking sessions once per month or with greater intervals more appropriate.

We have a 48 hour cancellation policy from the date/time of the booked session. You may be required to pay for part, or the full amount of a missed session.
Once you’re booked, you’ll receive a confirmation email with the time of your first appointment and the contact information of your counsellor.
You will not be charged for late/missed cancellations for emergencies or extenuating circumstances. These circumstances will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Registered Counsellors in BC are not eligible or trained in advanced, formal psychological assessment/diagnosis (
Level C). However, Clinical Counsellors are eligible and some are trained in
Level A and
Level B testing.
These types of tests can act as an integral aspect to better understand client's level of functioning, personality, psychological needs, and as a component towards better understanding and increased awareness of other dynamics potentially at play.
Your counsellor is trained in some of these assessments, but they are all non-diagnostic in their nature. Level C assessments are typically conducted by Psychologists and can be used for identifying/treating more complex mental health conditions and concerns.
